Pre-Higher Education

Primary School
Length of program in years: 9

Certificate/diploma awarded: Intermediate School Certificate

Upper Secondary School
Length of program in years: 3
Age level from: 15 to: 18
Certificate/diploma awarded: Al Thanawiya (General Secondary Education Certificate)

Secondary education covers three years. After a common first-year curriculum, students choose either the scientific or literary track for the remaining two years. The Al Thanawiya examination is taken at the end of the third year. There are some technical secondary schools, three vocational training centres, a Veterinary Training School, a Health Manpower Training Institute and several agricultural secondary schools. There are also religious institutes which concentrate on Islamic education.

Higher education is provided by the University of Sana'a, founded in 1970, the University of Aden, founded in 1973, and the University of Science and Technology, Sana'a. Admission is based on the Al Thanawiya. A score of at least 80 per cent is required for admission to the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering. For the Faculties of Science, Agriculture and Commerce, the requirement is 65-70 per cent and for the Faculties of Law, Education and Arts it is 50-60 per cent. Precise entry requirements may vary from year to year.

Admission requirements

Secondary school Certificate level. If students are continuing their studies, universities take their grades into consideration.

Language requirements

Students should have a good knowledge of English and/or Arabic.
